Preparing for Miss Universe 2018, she looked at the arts of
her people from Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Atom L Pornel says "Catriona
Gray proudly showcased the Philippines' colorful heritage and artistry at the
beauty pageant" (12 December 2018, "Catriona Gray Champions Filipino Artistry
In Miss Universe Pageant," Good News
Pilipinas, goodnewspilipinas.com).Thus,
Miss Catriona did it all through fashion "bannering Filipino pride" (based
on Mr Pornel's knowledgeable report):
Fusion: traditional
and modern Filipino creation – white dress paired with Sampaguita-inspired
rattan bag. Sampaguita is PH's national flower. Thai night, white top with a
red skirt with T'boli embroidery. Siam Snail Farm tour, inabel top and denim
jacket embroidered with the word "Kababayan." Video shoot,
blue-infused-with-pink T'nalak dress. Media interview: beige dress with modern
T'nalak fabric. Event: hand-made lady's barong from pineapple silk from Laguna,
apple green skirt with hand-painted sampaguita, T'nalak belt. Closed-door
preliminary interview: Terno top partnered with Ifugao skirt. Before national costume
competition: fuchsia pink one-sided sleeve blazer with T'nalak accent. Press conference:
One-sided off-shoulder with modern purple T'nalak.
Luzviminda national
costume – All-Philippine costume called "Magdiwang, Lumaban, Pagyamanin"
(Celebrate, Fight, Enrich).
Luzon (Magdiwang): Backpiece
a grand lantern from the Christmas Capital of the Philippines, Pampanga; brass
border inspired by Philippine baroque churches. At back of lantern, excerpt
from national anthem using baybayin, ancient Filipino alphabet.
Visayas (Lumaban): Wears
body suit embellished with crystals intricately patterned after tattoos of Pintados
warriors. In her Instagram account, Miss Catriona says, "The tattoos
represent an individual's journey and a public testimony recounting acts of
combat, bravery, and strength, that perfectly represents the courageous and
resilient Filipino spirit amidst trials we face in this day and age."
Mindanao (Enrich): Authentic
T'boli headpiece "suwat" and brass accessories, bracelets, belt and
cuffs from South Cotabato. Boots from textile of Mindanao Lumads: Inaul, Yakan,
Maranao, B'laan, Bagobo, Tausog and T'nalak.
Mr Atom says the National Quincentennial Committee that
handles the preparations for the 500th year of the victory at Mactan, the first
circumnavigation of the world, and introduction of Christianity to the Philippines,
thanked Miss Catriona for "capturing and displaying" what were "the
thousands of years of history and heritage of the Filipino people – an
embodiment of time that our history did not just start in 1521."
Miss Catriona strutted on stage with a gown inspired by Miss
Universe Mikimoto crown and the "Ibong Adarna," a Philippine mythical
bird. She had dangling earrings with the golden sun patterned after the sun in
the Philippine flag, and golden south sea pearls.
Finals: Miss Catriona wore a lava-red flaming gown, "a
homage to the Mayon volcano in Albay," her hometown (The GNP Team, 17 December
2018, "Catriona Gray Gifts The Philippines 4th Miss Universe Crown,
Advocates Positivity," Good News Pilipinas,
goodnewspilipinas.com).
She wore "three-stars-and-a-sun" ear cuff reflecting the Philippine
flag.
All that art. All that glitter?
Catriona Gray said in her social media videos: "Philippines,
it brings me so much joy to carry you across my heart." And the world watched
on Monday, 17 December 2018, when she was crowned Miss Universe 2018:
All that glitter turned to gold!517
